APIE MONALA
A story of learning by doing
From my hands to your everyday wardrobe

BEFORE MONALA

I learned by making

Long before Monala had a name, I was teaching myself how to create clothes with yarn. I learned to crochet through curiosity, practice and countless experiments, eventually creating technically complex garments that my friend and I photographed and exhibited.

One of the pieces I remember most is a dress I crocheted for myself. I wore it when I collected my bachelor’s diploma — and I remember feeling just as proud of wearing something I had made with my own hands as I was of graduating.

Years later, while working as a cultural events organiser, I decided to leave my job and create one of my own. I registered with the Employment Service with a clear answer: I wasn’t looking for another job. I wanted to build my own business. A programme supporting young entrepreneurs gave me the opportunity to turn that decision into something real. That was the beginning of Monala.

The name is personal too: MONALA comes from MONIka and ALAvočiūtė, my maiden name.

Softness, lightness and longevity

I have always been drawn to softness — in materials, in the way clothes feel on the body, and in the quiet ease of pieces that become part of everyday life. When choosing yarn for Monala, I wanted a natural fibre that could bring together that softness with quality and longevity.

That led me to merino wool. Soft, breathable and naturally temperature-regulating, it can be worn through much of the year. For Monala knitwear, I choose carefully selected Italian 100% extra fine merino wool yarns.

I want each piece to earn its place in a wardrobe: easy to combine, comfortable to return to, and made to be worn for years rather than replaced every season.

A craft I learned step by step

When I bought my first knitting machine, I had to learn all over again. I studied late into the night, watched lessons, experimented, made mistakes and travelled to experienced knitters to learn from them in person. I wanted to understand not only how a garment should look, but how it is actually made.

That closeness to the process still matters to me. Monala knitwear is made in Lithuania in small quantities, using both manual and industrial knitting machines depending on the design and construction of each garment. Every piece is carefully finished by hand, with attention to the yarn, shape and final details.
WHY I STILL DO IT

From making to wearing

Monala has never felt like just a business to me. It brings together the things I love: creating, organising, developing new pieces, working with materials and bringing an idea to life through photography.

But one of my favourite moments is still packing a finished piece and sending it to its new owner. It means a lot when a customer writes to tell me how much she loves her knitwear — and even more when she comes back for another piece.

That is what I want Monala to be: a smaller wardrobe of thoughtful pieces worth wearing, caring for and coming back to.
